Phalaenopsis kunstleri Hook. f. 1890

Informação adicional: Subgénero Polychilos Secção Fuscatae Sweet 1968

Esta falenopse epífita encontra-se distribuída por Miamar e pela Península da Malásia, em altitudes baixas a moderadas (300 a 1800 m) e em florestas húmidas.

Normalmente tem entre 2 a 4 folhas, sendo estas de tamanho médio, até cerca de  20 cm por 6 cm.

A inflorescência é paniculada, comprida (até 30 cm), erecta a pendente, com apenas algumas flores. A floração costuma ser no Outono.

O cultivo é o esperado para o género, tolerante a pouca luz, de temperaturas médias a quentes (18-32ºC) e de preferência com humidade alta.

As raízes são mais finas que muitas outras espécies e requerem, por isso, algum cuidado adicional.

This epiphyte is distributed by Myanmar and Malay Peninsula, in low to moderate altitudes (300 to1800 m) and in rainforests.

Usually, it has 2 to 4 leaves, which are of medium size, up to 20 cm by 6 cm.

The inflorescence is a panicle, long (30 cm), erect to pendant, with just a few flowers. The flowering usually appears in autumn but it is not always so.

Cultivation  is as expected for the genus, it is tolerant of low light and it likes medium to hot temperatures (18-32 º C) with high humidity.

The roots are thinner than in many other species, and therefore, require some extra care.

Phalaenopsis equestris (Schauer) Rchb.f., Linnaea 22: 864 (1850).

Ocorre nas Filipinas e na ilha de Taiwan, entre os 0 e os 300m de altitude. É uma planta pequena a média. A floração pode ocorrer durante todo o ano mas mais frequentemente entre Fevereiro e Maio. As flores variam entre rosa a branco e possuem 2 cm geralmente. As hastes florais são paniculadas com até 30 cm e com numerosas flores que vão abrindo sucessivamente. As hastes não devem ser cortadas pois produzem ramificações ou keikis na maioria dos casos.

Uma das mais faceis espécies de Phalaenopsis em cultivo. Precisa de temperaturas quentes durante todo o ano. Suporta no entanto temperaturas mais baixas (15ºC) no Inverno, desde que mantida seca. Idealmente cultivada em vaso em um substrato com boa drenagem. Luz média e regas frequentes no crescimento deixando secar bem entre regas. Adubar normalmente de duas em duas semanas durante o crescimento.

 Occurs in the Philippines and Taiwan Island, between 0 and 300 m altitude. It is a small plant average. Flowering can occur throughout the year but more frequently between February and May. The flowers vary from pink to white and are usually 2 cm. The floral stems are panicle up to 30 cm, with numerous flowers that will open successively. Floral stems should not be cut because they usually lead to branching or keiki.

One of the easiest Phalaenopsis species in cultivation. It needs warm temperatures throughout the year. Supports however lower temperatures (15 º C) in Winter, since it’s kept dry. Ideally grown in pots in a substrate that drain well. Medium light and frequent watering when in growth, letting dry between watering. Fertilize every two weeks during growth.

Oncidium eurycline Rchb.f., Gard. Chron., n.s., 20: 812 (1883).

Segundo os Kew gardens, esta espécie é na verdade um sinónimo de Oncidium longipes. Eu mantive esta identificação porque o comprei como tal e  parece me haver algumas diferenças. A espécie ocorre desde a Venezuela até ao Brasil. É uma planta pequena com pseudobolbos alongados, comprimidos lateralmente e com uma a duas folhas no topo. A haste floral cresce de entre uma das duas folhas basais do pseudobolbo quando este ainda está em crescimento. A floração ocorre no final do Inverno até início da Primavera. A haste pode ter de uma a várias flores sendo estas de 2,5 cm e ligeiramente fragrantes.

 O cultivo é facil. Precisa de uma luz forte sem sol directo, evitanto especialmente as horas de maior calor. Prefere temperaturas amenas e humidade relativamente alta não gostando muito do nosso Verão. Nessa altura as regas devem ser aumentadas e até reduzir-se a luminosidade nesta altura. Durante o Outono e Inverno necessita de mais luz e regas mais moderadas mas adubando pois a planta cresce nessa altura até à Primavera e à floração.

 According to the Kew gardens, this species is actually a synonym of Oncidium longipes. I kept this ID because I bought it as such and I think there are some differences. The species occurs from Venezuela to Brazil. It is a small plant with pseudobulbs elongated and laterally compressed with one to two leaves on top. The flowering stem grows from one of the two basal leaves of pseudobulbs when it is still growing. Flowering occurs in late Winter to early Spring. The floral stem can have one to several flowers which are of 2.5 cm and slightly fragrant.

Cultivation is easy. Need a bright light without direct sunlight, especially not during the hours of greatest heat. Prefers cool temperatures and relatively high humidity and do not like much of our Summer in which we should increased watering and even reduce the light level’s at this time. During Autumn and Winter it needs more light and fertilize because it’s when the plant grows until the spring and blooming.

Phalaenopsis mannii Rchb.f., 1871.

Mais uma falenopse, espécie, da minha pequena colecção destas orquídeas. Esta espécie é nativa da China, India, Nepal e Vietname.

É pequena, não chegando a atingir mais de 10 cm de altura, mas com várias folhas, lisas de comprimento muito superior a isso (até cerca de 45 cm). A cor da orquídea tipo desta espécie é diferente desta aqui mostrada, esta variedade cultivada (cultivar) é uma daquelas que é meristemada devido à sua cor mais forte e mais difundida pelas tépalas. Esta é a cultivar Mahogany, por vezes também vista como Red, Ebony ou simplesmente Dark.

O cultivo é igual ao da espécie tipo, mas esta variedade tem a reputação de ser mais fácil. Depois de alguma habituação até cresce com água com mais sais e calcário do que muitas outras espécies deste género.Tem outra particularidade, a de ser tolerante a temperaturas mais baixas, até 7º C, devido a ser originária de florestas de 500 a 1500 m. Além disso, vegeta em luz fraca, no tronco de árvores, pelo que é pouco exigente em luz. O ciclo de regas e também bastante adequado para países temperados, gostando de rega frequente na Primavera e Verão e pouca rega no Inverno.

Bastante florífera, dá várias hastes florais, que numa planta adulta e robusta podem chegar a ter dezenas de flores. Normalmente a floração ocorre na Primavera e ainda dura bastante tempo, até mais de 3 meses.

One more moth orchid, of my little collection of these orchids. This species is native to China, India, Nepal and Vietnam.

It is small, not reaching more than 10 cm, in height, but with several simple, green leafs, that can be up to 45 cm long. The color of the type orchid, for this species,  is different from that shown here. This cultivated variety (cultivar) is one of those meristems that has a stronger color, and less stripes in the  tepals. This is the cultivar Mahogany sometimes also seen as Red, Ebony or just Dark.

Cultivation is the same as the type, but this variety has a reputation for being easier. It can adapt to being grown with water with more lime and salt than many other species of this genus. It has another characteristic, to be tolerant to lower temperatures (around 7 ºC or 45F), due to being originated from forests around 500-1500 m.  As it grows in low light, in the trunk of trees, it needs  little light. The cycle of watering is, also, very suitable for temperate countries, enjoying frequent watering in spring and summer and little watering in winter.

Quite floriferous, gives several flower stalks. Besides that, a robust and mature plant can have as many as dozens of flowers. Usually, flowering occurs in spring and lasts a long time, even more than three months.

Cypripedium kentuckiense C.F.Reed

Orquídea terrestre, relativamente grande para o género podendo atingir 70 cm de altura. As flores podem ter até 12cm sendo as maiores do género. Encontra-se na região Centro-Sul dos EUA, nomeadamente nos estados do  Texas, Mississippi, , Ohio, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee e como o seu nome indica no estado do Kentucky.

Em relação ao cultivo não posso falar pois comprei-a recentemente e trata-se de uma experiência que espero que corra bem. Isto porque os Cypripedium vêm de zonas temperadas e ou de altitude onde têm um repouso no Inverno com temperaturas muito baixas. Em Portugal essas baixas temperaturas talvez não sejam suficientes e por isso provavelmente vou guardar o rizoma no frigorifico para simular esse periodo.

Outro problema será o nosso Verão que poderá ser demasiado seco e quente para estas plantas. Eu tenho a minha num sítio abrigado e virado a Norte. Espero que ele se aguente bem nesse local  durante o Verão e com a ajuda de bastantes regas também. O substrato é uma mistura de partes iguais de turfa com perlite e tenho adubado com metade da concentração de duas em duas semanas. Se daqui a um ano voltar a postar a sua floração é sinal que a experiência correu bem! 

Terrestrial orchid, relatively large for the genus up to 70 cm tall. Flowers can be up to 12cm being the largest of its genus. Occurs in U.S.A.,  in the states of Texas, Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee and as its name suggests the state of Kentucky.

Regarding the cultivation i can not speak because i bought it recently and it is an experience that i hope it goes well. Cypripedium comes from high or temperate zones where they have a dormency period during winter with very low temperatures. In Portugal these low temperatures may not be enough, so i’ll probably keep the rhizome in the fridge to simulate this period.

Another problem is that the summer may be too hot and dry for these plants. I have mine in a sheltered and facing north place. I hope it will hold well in this location during the summer and with the help of many watering as well. The substrate is a mixture of equal parts of peat with perlite and I fertilized with half strength every two weeks. If a year from now i post it flowering is a sign that the experience went well!

Oncidium gutfreundianum Chiron & V.P.Castro, Richardiana 3: 122 (2003).

Tal como o Oncidium brunleesianum, este Oncidium também se encontra segundo alguns no género Baptistonia.

Orquídea originária do estado brasileiro da Bahia, ocorrendo entre os 300 e os 500 m de altitude.

A planta é muito semelhante ao Oncidium brunleesianum, possuindo no entanto flores mais pequenas e ligeiramente fragrantes.

Cultivo a planta de  igual forma que o Oncidium brunleesianum, estão lado a lado até.

Orchid from the Brazilian state of Bahia, occurring between 300 and 500 m high.

The plant is very similar to Oncidium brunleesianum, however this one have smaller flowers that are slightly fragrant.

I grow the plant the same manner as Oncidium brunleesianum.
