A primeira orquídea do género Ophyrs a florir e uma das mais bonitas. Encontra-se distribuída por toda a bacia mediterrânea do nivel do mar até aos 1800 metros de altitude. As orquídeas deste género têm uma estratégia de polinização bastante curiosa pois o seu formato simula a fêmea de uma determinada espécie de insecto. Os insectos macho ao verem estas flores ,que curiosamente aparecem mais cedo que os insectos femea, não resistem e realizam aquilo que se chama de pseudocópula entre várias flores, polinizando-as. Esta espécie em particular é polinizada por insectos do género Andrena simulando até as feromonas das fêmeas!
The first orchid of the genus Ophyrs to bloom here in Portugal and one of the most beautiful. It is distributed throughout the Mediterranean from sea level up to 1800 meters high. The orchids of this genus have a strategy for pollination rather unusual as its shape mimics the female of a species of insect. The male insects seeing these flowers, which curiously appears earlier than the female insects, do not resist and perform what is called pseudocopulation between various flowers, pollinating them. This particular species is pollinated by insects of the genus Andrena and they even simulate the female pheromones!
